71st Evac Hosp-Pleiku, Vietnam - Stories

These stories are true, but the names may be
changed to protect the innocent. Besides, my memory
isn't very good any more. I haven't researched any of these for historical detail, but have lived them. Steven Streeper - Copyright, 2007

Pleiku AFB Ammo Dump

One morning we got a rather rude wakeup call when our hootch started to rock 'n roll. Wondering what was going on, we all wandered outside and looked around. At the far end of the main AFB runway, there was a huge column of black smoke, rising into the sky. The sounds of explosions filled the air and we could see fireballs erupting. After a slight delay, the sound of the explosion would arrive. We could also see the trails of tracers criss-crossing the sky. It was pretty spectacular.

We pulled our lawn chairs out on the sidewalk so we could see better and watched the fireworks for several hours. We learned that some VC sappers had gotten into the AFB ammo dump and touched it off. Those explosions were 500 lb bombs. Occasionally a napalm bomb would cook off and make quite a nice fireball. It was kind of fun to watch, but none of us believed that it was innocuous...we'd all seen what those kind of explosions could do to a body.
